Kia ora e te whānau,
I hope you have had a fabulous and restful break. We look forward to having our young people masked up and back on campus next week!
This email is a heads up that major property work has now commenced at school and will continue for the next two to three terms.
Below is a high level outline of the property works that will be occurring over the coming terms. This is the Weather Tightness Project, we will also have further Modernisation property work happening later in the year, I will share those details at a later date, as they are confirmed.
Please read carefully.
Construction at school Terms Three and Four 2022, Term One 2023
The Ministry of Education has organised construction work to take place at Albany Senior High School from Thursday 21 July until early next year to ensure the weather-tightness of the gym and the main building, with contractors working to fix the roof leaks and watertightness issues.
We are aware that construction on site can be disrupting for students and staff and alongside the Ministry of Education, we’re working closely with the contractor, Accent Construction, to ensure noise and disruption is kept to a minimum.
Construction will take place between 7am and 6pm and work will continue throughout the school holidays to ensure the project is completed as quickly as possible.
Note – There will be no access to the gym carpark for staff, student or visitor parking, as this will become the contractor’s construction site.
The work will be undertaken in stages to minimise disruption for students and staff.
Stage One: From 21 July and throughout Term 3
Gym
- Scaffolding will be installed around the gym to allow contractors safe access to the roof.
- Leaks will be repaired, skylights will be removed and new roof panels and gutters installed.
- The ceilings in the changing rooms will also be replaced.
The gym will remain open throughout the works.
Stage Two: From 8 August and throughout Term Three and Four 2022, and Term One 2023
Main school building
- Scaffolding will be installed around the building to allow contractors safe access to the roof.
- Leaks will be repaired, skylights and some roof panels will be replaced.
The main building is planned to remain open throughout the works in Term Three and Term Four, but because of the potential construction noise, NCEA exams will take place at Massey University campus instead of on site at school. More details on the location will be provided later.
FAQs
What work is being undertaken?
Construction will take place to ensure the weather-tightness of the gym and the main building, with contractors working to fix the roof leaks and watertightness issues.
Skylights will be removed on the gym and replaced in the main building. Some roof and ceiling
panels will be replaced on both buildings.
Why does the work need to be undertaken?
The work is part of the Ministry of Education’s capital works programme to ensure Albany Senior High School buildings are weathertight. We have had ongoing roof leaks and watertightness issues in the gym and main building, and there are long-term benefits for the school to have these watertightness issues solved now.
Will the school need to close?
No, the school can remain open throughout the works.
We will work closely with the Ministry of Education and Accent Construction to monitor and
minimise any disruption to students and staff.
Contractors will also work throughout the school holidays to ensure the project is completed as
quickly as possible.
Why are the NCEA exams moving to Massey University?
The nature of the construction work on the main building means that there may be some noise
disruption, especially on the school’s upper levels. We want to ensure that students have the best environment for their exams, with no distractions, so have approved the exams to take place off site at Massey University.
