Kia ora e te whānau,
Firstly, it has been fabulous having our young people back on site! It is great to see them engaged with their learning and so clearly enjoying the opportunity (for socially distanced) social connection. On the whole they are doing a great job wearing their masks and following the return to school protocols.
I also wanted to drop a quick line to remind our community about our preparation and planning for an inevitable increase in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks.
Stay home, if unwell
Firstly, now more than ever, it is important that students stay home if unwell. Please ensure you contact the school and let us know. It is particularly important that you let us know if your young person has been a close contact and if they are being tested. You must contact us immediately if your young person has a positive COVID-19 test. Please email: absences@ashs.school.nz
What happens if a student has been at school whilst infectious?
As soon as we are aware of a student or staff having COVID-19 we will follow the Ministry of Education guidelines.
This will include:
- Ensuring the student or staff member remains at home.
- Ascertaining when they were infectious and identifying all possible close contacts.
- We will then contact all students and parents and caregivers of any possible close contacts and ask them to remain home and get tested.
- An email with more specific details about the process will be shared with all involved.
- The school will remain open.
- Teaching and learning will continue from home for any students having to self isolate.
Teaching and learning from home
As a school we are already focusing on hybrid learning and ensuring all classes can be accessed from home when necessary. To this end it is very important that every student has an appropriate device for learning. If you have any queries about getting a device for your young person, please contact Klaris at: kphilipson@ashs.school.nz

In the meantime, please continue to look after yourselves and those around you.
All the best for the coming weeks. We know it will be challenging for many, but also know that we have the plans in place to minimise disruption and to ensure fantastic teaching and learning will continue.
