ASHS Update – NCEA Changes 26/08/21

Kia ora whānau

As Auckland will continue to stay in Level Four lockdown until 11.59pm on Tuesday 31st August (and possibly beyond) we are now beginning to get updates about changes to NCEA. I will continue to share these updates as they come to hand.

NCEA Updates

As the whole country is in Alert Level 4, these date changes will apply across New Zealand.

End of year exams and portfolios

The dates for end of year NCEA and NZ Scholarship exams will be delayed by two weeks, to run from Monday 22 November until Tuesday 14 December. Due dates for portfolio submissions will also be pushed back by 2 weeks.

These two changes will give students and schools more time to prepare for the end of the year.

Schools will also not have to provide Level 1 or Level 2 Visual Arts portfolios for NZQA Verification. This also means there will be more time for students to finish their work, and for teachers to mark it.

Other changes

As the length of time we are likely to remain in lockdown becomes clearer, there are extra steps the Government may take, such as reintroducing Learning Recognition Credits, or making changes to the thresholds for Endorsements and University Entrance. We are working with the Minister’s Professional Advisory Group and schools so that we would be in a position to implement them, depending on the duration of Alert Levels 3 and 4.

Existing flexibility and processes

We already have a lot of control over how we teach and assess students working towards NCEA. To this end, we will continue to teach and assess online over lockdown as per the timetable and guidelines below. It is important that our young people continue to engage with Tutorials, Impact Projects and Specialist Subjects and work closely with their teachers as assessments are adapted and evidence of learning is gathered.

We will keep you updated!

As always we will keep you updated as soon as we hear anything. I always tend to follow up this newsletter with an email to students. Please remind your young person to check their inbox! How we will approach things like the Prelims and any practice exams will be communicated soon.

And again, thank you!

Thanks again to our staff, students and whanau for continuing to work together. We have had great rates of engagement in the last week and we look forward to having this continue. I recognise that life in lockdown can be a challenging juggling act, and I  encourage any of our young people to reach out should they need further support.

And remember…

Be kind.
Stay safe.
Stay home.
Wear a mask if going out!
We got this team!!

Nga mihi
