ASHS Update on latest MOE news release 18/08/20

Kia ora whānau,

You may have heard by now that the Ministry of Education is changing the rules to enable schools to apply to allow some Year 12 and 13 students back to school from either tomorrow or Thursday.

The school has considered the current level of community transmission and its possible impact on our wider Auckland community, along with the restrictions and Health and Safety requirements that need to be put in place for the school to open up for discrete bubbles of 20 students with a single teacher to be able to return to school. Considering all of these factors, Albany Senior High School has made the decision not to apply to open school for senior student groups and will continue to operate under the original Alert Level Three guidelines. We will, of course, review this position if the lockdown goes on for longer than the two weeks planned at present.

As a school we feel that the wellbeing of our students and staff are our top priority at this point and time, we are also not willing to take unnecessary risks that could compromise the health of our community. We believe that the ASHS ‘Learning at Home’ plan (attached below), the flexibility of NCEA, the Learning Recognition credits and the ability to establish “derived grades” if needed will enable us to support our learners to work towards their academic goals. We are aware that some learners will be particularly concerned about their practical subjects, and to this end we will look to be flexible so they can prioritise these subjects (as needed) when they return to school. It is important to remember that there is a lot of flexibility in NCEA and in our timetable, we just need to ensure we take advantage of it!

Recently, Forbes published a list of capabilities needed to thrive in a post COVID world. Adaptability and a commitment to lifelong learning topped the list. It is important to recognise that our young people do indeed have a lifetime of learning ahead of them and that much learning can also be gained from adapting and living through these lockdown periods. If you have any specific questions or concerns about career and pathway planning you can contact our Career’s Advisor, Craig Dyason, for an online meeting at any point and time over this lockdown period. Email: cdyason@ashs.school.nz

I also want to take this opportunity to thank you, once again, for your ongoing support of the school and of your young person’s learning and wellbeing.

And as always, please remember:

Be kind.

Stay safe.

Stay home.

Wear a mask if going out!

We got this team!!

Please read the plan for learning from home below!

 Nga mihi
