"Gateway opens a new pathway from school to the world of work. It's a great opportunity to blend school study with workplace learning and experience. Learning is assessed in the workplace or at school and counts towards national qualifications".
Albany Senior High School is pleased to be able to offer the Gateway Programme to its students. This programme will enable motivated students to get a feel of working in an industry that interests them, which in turn will help students to make more informed career choices. Students will not be paid during placement, the focus of a placement is to allow them to gain valuable learning experience and knowledge about how their chosen industry works.
Before Gateway students are able to go into their work placement, they must prove to their industry that they are workplace ready. Course, such as First Aid are offered to provide evidence for placements that this is the case. Students will have an opportunity to achieve a minimum of 10 NZQA credits throughout their time on Gateway. Assesments are completed through a Gateway workbook.
It is intended that Gateway students will attend their designated workplace for a minimum of 10 day. Where possible this will be organised for their Wednesday impact project.
The Gateway student is expected to show commitment to the programme, meeting the responsibilities and expectations that have been entrusted with them as an ambassador of our school. They must also meet the expectations of the employer.
For Example:
- Young adults need to ensure they are polite, courteous and conduct themselves appropriately for the work they will be doing.
- They need to be punctual and attend the working days that have been organised. Students must let their employer and Gateway Coordinator know if for any reason they are unable to go to work (before the start of the day).
- Make sure they complete all workplace and school assessments as required.
- Make sure they keep themselves and work colleagues safe by following the Health and Safety procedures that are in place.
- Listen carefully to all instructions, remember what they have been told and carry out tasks to the best of their ability. If they don't understand something they should not be afraid to ask. they are aware that employer's appreciate students who are willing to learn.
- They must treat all fellow workers with respect and thank them for their help.
