Absences
What do I do if my son or daughter is going to be absent for a short period (less than 3 days)?
If your young adult is unable to attend school for a period of less than 3 days, please phone the school on (09)451 9065 as soon as possible. You can even phone out of office hours as the school has an answerphone that is cleared daily. If you leave a message please clearly say your son or daughter's name and the reason for the absence as the school is required to use the correct Ministry of Education absence code to record the absence.
Any unexplained absence will be followed up with a phone call from our the school.
What do I do if my son or daughter is going to be away for a sustained period (4 days or longer)?
If the reason for the absence is medical, as well as the phone call to the school at the start of the absence period, the school also needs to receive either a written note from home or a medical certificate on the day the student returns to school.
If the reason for the absence is self-interest (overseas holiday, sports trip etc) then your son or daughter will need to collect a 'Request for Special Leave' form from reception. Once the leave details are completed your son or daughter will need to take it to each of their teachers to sign off on whether they will be missing any assessments and, if they are, whether there is the possibility for a re-sit.
Once the form is completed it needs to be returned to reception as, under the Education Act, all requests for special leave have to be signed by the Principal.
This form will allow you to track the work that will be missed during the absence.
